WHY IS REDIRECTING THE ROOTS HERE?
We believe that as individuals who struggle with same-sex attractions begin to understand what is at the root of why they have same sex attractions and can begin to redirect their roots in seeing God for who He really is, seeing themselves as God sees them, allowing God to heal them of past wounds, and connecting them in healthy same sex relationships that change is possible. With that said though, in our minds change is not the ultimate goal. The ultimate goal is to help them become more like Jesus, to fall more in love with Him and to trust Him more deeply even if they never see the change they may desire. We also want to equip believers to be more actively involved with the friends around them who are hurting and in need of our love and support.
BIOGRAPHY ON KENDALL
Kendall grew up in a small town in Kansas and became a Christian his senior year of high school through the influence of his youth group leader. After graduating he went on to Kansas State University, was actively involved from his sophomore year on, and joined the staff of Cru in January 1986 right after he graduated. Kendall has a BS in Accounting from Kansas State University, a Masters in Christian Counseling from Cairn University (near Philadelphia, PA), and has completed Cru’s Institute of Biblical Studies of 32 credits in Bible, Theology, and Apologetics. In his 30 years on staff Kendall has spent the whole time with the Campus Field Ministry of Cru at various locations such as Penn State, Virginia Tech, Michigan State, University of Rhode Island, and Towson University, and has also served in the Middle East for four years reaching out there to Muslim university students. Kendall currently serves as the Mid-Atlantic Region’s New Staff Development Director.
BIOGRAPHY ON LOIS
Although Lois was raised in the church, she did not become a Christian until her freshman year at Ohio State after being followed up by a couple of Cru staff from a questionnaire she had taken at a bus stop! Overtime she got actively involved in Cru on her campus and joined staff in 1990 right after she graduated. Lois has a BS in Foreign Language Education from the Ohio State University and also has completed Cru’s Institute of Biblical Studies of 32 credits in Bible, Theology, and Apologetics. She has served 24 years on staff with the Campus Field Ministries of Cru starting out at Kent State University and then serving in East Asia for 4 ½ years before getting married to Kendall in 2003. After we were married we served at Towson University for three years and have now been serving in our Mid-Atlantic Regional Office for the past 7 years. Lois currently serves on our region’s Global Missions Team, the sending arm of the US Campus Ministry, as Partnership Director for Botswana, Africa.
WHERE WE HAVE SPOKEN
We have been giving seminars on staff with Cru since 2001 on either how to minister to those who struggle with same sex attractions or how to reach out to those who identify as gay and lesbian. We have addressed Cru university students and staff in a variety of venues -- at Christmas Conferences including the Great Lakes, Upper Mid-West, Greater Northwest, and New England Winter Conferences; at weekly meetings and in open forums on a number of campuses; on summer projects and at Regional Staff Conferences. We have also spoken a number of times at the Cru U.S. Staff Conference. Last summer Kendall gave one of the largest men’s seminars at our National Staff Conference at Colorado State University addressing “How to Minister to Those Struggling with Homosexuality.” We also have spoken in a variety of different church settings. In the seminars that we give Kendall shares about walking through his own struggles with same sex attractions and how in Christ there is hope that individuals can change.
KENDALL'S BACKSTORY OF HIS STRUGGLES WITH SAME-SEX ATTRACTIONS
Kendall began to struggle with same-sex attractions in middle school and hoped that if he dated enough girls somehow his attractions toward the opposite sex would kick in. He became a Christian in twelfth grade as an indirect influence of one of his youth sponsors who presented the gospel at a fall retreat. Much of his Christian growth occurred while in college when he was involved with Cru while living in a Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity though he still secretly still did not know why he had these attractions. It was not until a couple years later that his best friend confided with him about some of his own struggles in other areas that it opened the door for Kendall to share with him about his struggles with same sex attraction. It was not until after reading, studying, and getting some additional help that he was able to begin ministering to the church body on how they could be helpful to others who struggle.
